Surge Protection Devices (SPD) for Solar Systems — Why They Are Essential in the Philippines

Preview: Lightning surge destroyed a ₱180,000 inverter in Cavite last typhoon season. An ₱8,000 SPD would have prevented it.

Surge Protection Devices (SPD) for Solar Systems — Why They Are Essential in the Philippines

The Philippines has one of the highest lightning flash densities in Southeast Asia — averaging 15-30 flashes per km² per year in Luzon. For solar PV systems, which have large exposed DC cable runs on rooftops, proper surge protection is not optional. It is essential.

What Surges Threaten Your Solar System

Where SPDs Are Required

LocationSPD TypeVoltage RatingTypical Cost
DC side — solar string inputType 2 DC SPD600V or 1000V DC₱3,000–6,000
AC output — inverter to panelType 2 AC SPD230V/40kA₱2,500–5,000
Main distribution panelType 2 AC SPD230V/40kA₱2,500–5,000

What to Specify When Buying

What Most Philippine Installers Skip

Surveys of residential solar installations in Luzon show fewer than 30% include proper Type 2 DC SPDs on the solar input. Many installers quote the cheapest possible price and omit SPDs. When the typhoon hits and the inverter fries, you pay the ₱80,000–180,000 replacement cost.

Always ask your installer: "Does your quote include IEC-certified SPDs on both DC and AC sides?" If not, add them. Total cost: ₱8,000–15,000 to protect a ₱150,000+ system.
