Solar panel efficiency is one of the most misunderstood specifications. Installers use it to justify premium pricing. Homeowners compare it without understanding the context. Here is the complete picture.
Panel efficiency = electrical output power ÷ incident solar power × 100%
A 550W panel with 2.2m² total area: Efficiency = 550 ÷ (2,200 × 1,000W/m²) × 100 = 25% (at STC)
In practice, current monocrystalline panels range from 19% to 24% efficiency. TOPCon and HJT panels push to 24-25%.
| Scenario | Relevant Spec | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Limited roof space | Efficiency (%) | Higher efficiency = more watts in same area |
| Unlimited roof space | Cost per Watt (₱/Wp) | More panels at lower cost = same output cheaper |
| High heat environment | Temperature coefficient | Lower loss in Philippine heat — more important than efficiency |
| Partial shade roof | Low-light performance | Some panels generate better in overcast/morning light |
Standard PERC: -0.35%/°C. TOPCon: -0.30%/°C. HJT: -0.24%/°C. At 60°C panel temperature (common in Philippines):
Over 25 years, this adds up. But so does the price premium. Do the math for your specific system size.
