One of the most common mistakes during solar installation in the Philippines is mismatching the inverter phase with the property's grid connection. Homes are nearly always single-phase (1Φ, 220V). Commercial buildings, factories, and larger estates often have three-phase (3Φ, 380V line-to-line). Installing a 1-phase inverter on a 3-phase connection wastes capacity and can cause imbalance problems with Meralco.
| Feature | Single Phase (1Φ) | Three Phase (3Φ) |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage (PH standard) | 220V line-to-neutral | 380V line-to-line / 220V L-N |
| Typical connection | Residential homes, small shops | Commercial, industrial, large buildings |
| Meralco meter | Single-element meter | 3-element or 4-wire meter |
| Max practical inverter size | Up to ~5kW per phase | 10kW–100kW+ |
| Wiring complexity | Simpler, 2-wire or 3-wire | 4-wire (3 live + neutral) or 5-wire |
Look at your Meralco meter box. A single-phase connection has one or two service conductors from the pole. A three-phase connection has three thick cables entering the meter. Your monthly bill may also say "3-phase" under the service type field. If unsure, call Meralco or ask your electrician.
This is where phase type critically affects the calculation:
| Phase | Formula | Example (5,000W load) |
|---|---|---|
| Single Phase 1Φ | I = W ÷ V | 5,000 ÷ 220V = 22.7A → 32A breaker |
| Three Phase 3Φ | I = W ÷ (√3 × V × PF) | 5,000 ÷ (1.732 × 380 × 0.85) = 8.9A → 15A breaker |
Note how the same 5kW load requires a 32A breaker on 1-phase but only a 15A breaker on 3-phase. Using the wrong formula means an oversized or undersized breaker — both are code violations under PEC 2017.
