Learn About Solar

Everything you need to know before going solar in the Philippines.

There are three main types of solar power systems available in the Philippines. Each has different components, costs, and use cases depending on your needs.

FeatureOn-Grid (Grid-Tied)Off-GridHybrid
Battery Required?NoYesYes
Works During Blackout?NoYesYes
Net Metering Eligible?YesNoYes
Uses Grid Power?YesNoYes
Best ForUrban homes with stable gridRemote areas, no grid accessAreas with frequent brownouts
Upfront CostLowestHighestMedium-High
Long-Term SavingsHigh (net metering credits)Full independenceHigh + backup power

On-Grid (Grid-Tied)

The most affordable option. Solar panels connect to the grid through an inverter. Excess power is exported to Meralco for credits via net metering. No battery means no backup during blackouts, but lowest upfront cost and fastest ROI.

Off-Grid (Stand-Alone)

Completely independent from the utility grid. All power comes from solar panels and is stored in batteries. Ideal for remote locations in provinces without reliable Meralco connection. Highest cost due to large battery banks required.

Hybrid (On/Off-Grid)

The best of both worlds. Connected to the grid AND has battery storage. During the day, solar powers your home and charges the battery. During blackouts, the battery takes over automatically. This is the most popular choice for Philippine homeowners experiencing frequent brownouts.

Understanding where your investment goes helps you make smarter decisions. Here's the typical cost breakdown of a residential hybrid solar PV system in the Philippines:

Solar Panels~30-35%
33%
Battery Storage (LiFePO4)~25-30%
28%
Hybrid Inverter~15-20%
18%

Typical System Costs in the Philippines (2025-2026)

System SizeDIY (Supply Only)With InstallationMonthly SavingsPayback
1 kW₱25,000 – ₱45,000₱40,000 – ₱60,000~₱600 – ₱9004-5 years
3 kW₱70,000 – ₱120,000₱100,000 – ₱150,000~₱1,800 – ₱2,7003-4 years
5 kW₱120,000 – ₱200,000₱170,000 – ₱250,000~₱3,000 – ₱4,5003-4 years
10 kW₱250,000 – ₱400,000₱350,000 – ₱500,000~₱6,000 – ₱9,0003-4 years

Solar panel prices in the Philippines have dropped significantly — from ~₱15/watt in 2017 to ~₱7-10/watt in 2025-2026. LiFePO4 batteries have also become more affordable at ₱5-13 per Wh.

Solar is an investment that pays for itself. Here's exactly how we calculate your return on investment and monthly savings:

Step 1: Daily Energy Production

Daily kWh = System kWp × Peak Sun Hours × System Efficiency
Example: 5 kWp × 4.5 hrs × 0.80 = 18 kWh per day

The Philippines averages 4.5 peak sun hours per day. System efficiency of 80% accounts for heat, inverter losses, and wiring.

Step 2: Monthly & Annual Savings

Monthly Savings = (Daily kWh × 30) × Electricity Rate
Example: (18 × 30) × ₱11/kWh = ₱5,940 per month
Annual Savings = ₱5,940 × 12 = ₱71,280 per year

We use your actual Meralco rate (default ₱11/kWh) for accurate estimates. Rates have been increasing ~5-8% annually.

Step 3: Payback Period (ROI)

Payback = Total System Cost ÷ Annual Savings
Example: ₱250,000 ÷ ₱71,280 = 3.5 years

After the payback period, your solar system generates essentially free electricity for 20-25+ years (the lifespan of quality solar panels).

Step 4: CO₂ Offset

CO₂ Offset = Annual kWh × 0.7082 kg CO₂/kWh
Example: 5,256 kWh × 0.7082 = 3,722 kg CO₂ per year

This is equivalent to planting approximately 170 trees per year. The 0.7082 factor is based on the Philippine grid emission factor.

Net Metering (Meralco)

Under the Philippine Renewable Energy Act (RA 9513), qualified solar installations can apply for net metering with their distribution utility. Excess solar power exported to the grid earns credits that offset your bill. Net metering application requires: system size up to 100kW, a bidirectional meter, and approval from your utility (Meralco, VECO, etc.).

Lead Distribution Logic

Leads are automatically distributed using this priority:

  1. Exact province match — all installers covering the homeowner's province
  2. Same region fallback — if no exact match, try nearby provinces in the same region
  3. Elite nationwide — Elite plan installers serve as catch-all for unmatched leads
  4. Admin queue — if no installers match, lead stays unassigned for manual assignment

Within each level, Elite > Pro > Basic priority, and installers with more remaining leads get preference.
